If you want to get more involved in the community, I have just the event for you. New Journey United Church of Christ is putting on an Empty Bowls event, and they would love community members to come help out.
What is Empty Bowls? It’s a community event started back in 1990 by a group of art teachers from Michigan. The teamed up with local potters and community members to make bowls and glaze them. Then the bowls are purchased at a later event, along with a meal, to raise money to reduce hunger in the community.
New Journey UCC is holding several events before the main soup luncheon, and the entire community is welcome. The first event was held Saturday, September 16th and that kicked off the start of bowl making. But don’t worry if you missed it, there are plenty more opportunities. There will be two more bowl making events. Saturday, October 28th and Saturday, November 18th from 10-noon. These events will be located at New Journey UCC at 31 4th Ave SW, Hutchinson, MN 55350.
Each month the Clay Coyote says open late one night and we host an event called “Coyote After Dark.” At these events you can try throwing a pot for free, but you can’t keep it. We save as many as possible, trim them, and then mark them with our logo and HEB (Hutchinson Empty Bowl) and we are donating them to the event. We’ll also be donating bowls from some of our Clay Coyote Emerging Artists and Studio Potters. Be on the lookout for the bowl you may have made! There is still time to get in on the fun, our next Coyote After Dark events are October 5th, November 10th, and December 7th.
The bowl building is supported by the Thrivent Action Team Grant.
The next step in the process is glazing. New Journey UCC will be hosting an All Day Glazing Party on Wednesday, December 27th from 10-5pm. All community members of all ages are welcome. Come join in on the fun for a great cause!
The main event will be the Empty Bowls Soup Luncheon on Saturday, January 20th from 11-2pm. Come buy a bowl, enjoy a warm meal, make new friends, and help the community!
