Have you ever wondered why or where the tradition of giving certain gifts on each year of your wedding anniversary came about? I’m here to give you a little insight on that tradition, and help you find some amazing gifts at the Clay Coyote for some of those anniversaries!
According to Time Magazine, this tradition started in Germany in the 1800s. Back then, it was only traditional for the 15th anniversary to be given silver. Friends and family would give silver tokens to the couple to congratulate them on the length of their marriage. They would also do this for 50 years, and gave gold items instead.
In the later 1800s, it became traditional for the couple to give each other these gifts, but at the time, gender roles made women receiving the gift more acceptable.
Also in the late 1800s, they started developing a few more traditions. They added paper for year one, wood for five, tin for 10, china at 20, and diamonds at 60 years. Diamonds also became traditional for 75 years but is debated because of the longevity required for the marriage.
In the 20th century, companies like Hallmark started adding gifts for each tear. You can find their full list here with each year and gift that goes with it.
