Have you been hearing all about PFAS? Did you know that 11 states, including Minnesota, have moved to ban them by 2025?
Some of you might know this, but before buying the family business back in 2016, I worked for Consumer Reports as a product safety advocate, lobbying for everything from removing lead paint from kids’ toys to cell phone portability, the ability to take your phone with you when you move carriers, and backup cameras in vehicles.
Consumer Reports has done extensive work on food and cookware safety, including arsenic levels, microplastics, and per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, also known as PFAS.
PFAS are linked to some pretty bad health outcomes. “The most consistent links have been shown for thyroid dysfunction, decreased immune response, changes in liver enzymes, and increased cholesterol levels. Some studies suggest an association between PFAS and kidney and testicular cancers,” according to the US Department of Veterans Affairs.
More people are trying to rid their kitchens of PFAS and other toxic chemicals, so they are turning to clay cookware. And more people want authentic cookware; what better than cookware handmade right here in rural Minnesota?
Forbes listed our pots as top home cookware two years in a row. And the Star Tribune says, “this cookware should be in your kitchen.”
At the Clay Coyote, we’re very proud that we handmake cookware with no lead, nickel, cadmium, or PFAS. We are very careful to describe our ceramic cookware as “stick resistant” because it’s not 100% nonstick like PFAS-laden cookware purports, but a very little bit of oil goes a long way.
While I think all companies should make safe products, that’s not a guarantee. Laws like Minnesota’s new PFAS ban are essential in keeping your family safe.
At the Clay Coyote, we are committed to making quality, ethically-made, healthy pottery for years to come.
